Costa Rica occupies just 0.03% of the planet's surface — and holds close to 6% of its biodiversity. It abolished its army in 1948, runs on nearly 99% renewable electricity, doubled its forest cover in a single generation, and hosts one of the world's five Blue Zones, where people routinely live past one hundred.

In the 1980s, deforestation had reduced Costa Rica's forests to roughly a quarter of the country. Then it did something no tropical nation had done: it reversed course. Through pioneering payments for ecosystem services and one of the world's densest national park systems — over a quarter of the territory is protected — forest cover has climbed back to around 60%.
The world took note: Costa Rica received the inaugural Earthshot Prize for protecting and restoring nature, and remains the reference case for how a country can grow its economy while regrowing its forests.

Where unbroken rainforest meets the open Pacific, the air is among the cleanest a human being can breathe — filtered by millions of trees and washed by ocean wind, far from any industrial corridor. Rivers here run straight from protected mountains to the sea.

It shows in the people. The Nicoya Peninsula is one of only five Blue Zones on Earth — regions where living past one hundred is unremarkable. Researchers point to the same ingredients this coast offers in abundance: mineral-rich water, food from living soil, sun, movement, and community.
Costa Rica is the region's longest-standing democracy, without an army since 1948 and an OECD member since 2021. Global companies in medical devices and technology have made it a nearshore hub, and in September 2025 Moody's upgraded the country to Ba2 with a stable outlook, noting it remains one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America — averaging over 5% growth since 2021.

For foreign buyers, the law is refreshingly simple: foreigners hold exactly the same fee-simple property rights as citizens. Full title, in your name, protected by a stable legal system — which is why this coast has quietly become one of the hemisphere's most trusted places to own.

Created in 1989, Marino Ballena was the first national park in Central America dedicated to the sea. It protects more than 5,000 hectares of ocean — coral and rocky reefs, mangroves, islets and beaches — around its icon: the Whale's Tail, a sand-and-reef formation that emerges at low tide in the perfect shape of a fluke.

Humpback whales travel here from both ends of the planet: southern-hemisphere pods from Antarctic waters between July and November, and northern pods from Alaska and California between December and March. The result is one of the longest humpback seasons anywhere on Earth — roughly eight months a year — as mothers choose these warm, calm, protected waters to give birth and raise their calves.
